Woven Fabrics

Woven fabric is constructed by interlacing warp and weft yarns at right angles, producing a stable structure with minimal stretch. Ashelby International supplies woven fabrics in cotton, polyester and blended compositions from 100 to 400 GSM, at widths of 44 to 120 inches.

We produce plain, twill and satin weaves. Plain weave -- the simplest interlacing -- gives the firmest, most stable fabric and is the basis of poplin and shirting. Twill, identified by its diagonal rib, drapes more softly and resists showing soil, which is why it dominates trousers, chinos and denim. Satin weave floats yarn across the surface to produce lustre and a fluid drape, at the cost of greater snagging susceptibility.

Weight and width together drive both performance and cost. At 100 to 150 GSM the fabric suits shirting and lightweight summer apparel; 200 to 300 GSM covers trousers and heavier apparel; 300 to 400 GSM moves into upholstery and home furnishing. Width should be selected against the cutting plan -- specifying a width that matches marker efficiency can reduce fabric consumption materially across a production run.
