Knitted Fabrics

Knitted fabric is constructed from interlocking loops rather than interlaced yarns, which is what gives it stretch and recovery. Ashelby International supplies knitted fabrics from 120 to 350 GSM at widths of 36 to 96 inches, in cotton, viscose and polyester blends.

We produce single jersey, rib and interlock constructions. Single jersey is the lightest and most economical, with a distinct face and back, and is the standard for t-shirts -- though it curls at cut edges and requires appropriate finishing. Rib knit alternates face and back loops to produce lateral stretch and recovery, making it the standard for collars, cuffs and waistbands as well as fitted garments. Interlock is a double-knit construction: heavier and more stable than single jersey, identical on both faces, and preferred where a smoother, more substantial hand is required.

Weight selection follows the garment. 120 to 160 GSM suits lightweight summer t-shirts; 180 to 220 GSM is the mainstream range for standard t-shirts and polo shirts; 250 to 350 GSM covers sweatshirts, heavier loungewear and structured knitwear.
