Open end spinning -- also called rotor spinning -- produces yarn faster and more economically than ring spinning, at coarser counts. Ashelby International supplies open end yarn from 6s to 30s Ne for denim, knitwear, workwear and upholstery.

Our open end yarn carries tenacity of 15 to 20 g/tex with elongation of 6 to 8 per cent. The yarn structure differs fundamentally from ring spun: fibres are collected in a rotor rather than drafted continuously, producing a bulkier, more open yarn with a characteristically coarser surface. That structure is not a defect to be tolerated -- in denim it is precisely what produces the fabric character buyers expect, and the bulk gives good cover at lower fabric weights.

The commercial case is straightforward. At counts of 6s to 30s Ne, open end spinning delivers acceptable strength for the end use at meaningfully lower cost than ring spinning, and at higher production rates. For denim, workwear, upholstery and heavier knitwear, this is usually the correct specification. Where the fabric sits next to skin in a premium programme, or where fine counts above 30s Ne are required, ring spun is the better choice.
